M.Tech Programmes

Postgraduate research students in the laboratory
2 Years · 4 Semesters 36 Seats (12 per stream) English AKTU Affiliated 4.6 (48 reviews)

Programme Overview

MIT offers the M.Tech in three streams — Computer Science & Engineering, Structural Engineering and Thermal Engineering — with twelve seats each. The small cohorts are deliberate: this is a research degree, and a supervisor cannot meaningfully guide twenty dissertations at once.

The first year is taught coursework; the second is almost entirely the dissertation. Students work inside an existing department research strand rather than inventing a topic from scratch, which is why our completion rate is high and why several dissertations each year turn into conference papers.

GATE-qualified candidates receive a monthly stipend as per AICTE norms plus a teaching assistantship — typically two undergraduate tutorial groups per week, which is genuinely useful preparation for anyone considering an academic career.

Streams Offered

Computer Science & Engineering

Machine learning, distributed systems, network security and data engineering. Dissertations run in the Centre of Excellence GPU lab.

12 seats · Dr. Anjali Verma

Structural Engineering

Advanced structural analysis, earthquake-resistant design, concrete technology and construction materials research.

12 seats · Dr. Rajeev Sharma

Thermal Engineering

Heat transfer, IC engines, refrigeration, renewable thermal systems and energy efficiency in process industries.

12 seats · Prof. Sunil Kumar Tyagi

Curriculum — Semester by Semester

Stream-specific advanced coursework plus a common research methodology paper taken by all three streams together.

  • Advanced core paper I & II
  • Research Methodology & IPR
  • Programme Elective I
  • Advanced laboratory / simulation

Ends with the dissertation topic being registered and a supervisor formally allotted.

  • Programme Elective II & III
  • Open Elective
  • Technical Seminar
  • Dissertation topic registration

Literature review, methodology design and preliminary results, assessed by an internal panel presentation.

  • Dissertation Phase I
  • Literature review submission
  • Mid-term panel presentation
  • Teaching assistantship duties

Completion, thesis writing and defence before a panel including an external examiner. Publication is encouraged but not compulsory.

  • Dissertation Phase II
  • Thesis submission & plagiarism check
  • Open defence & external viva
  • Conference paper (optional)

Research Facilities

  • Centre of Excellence AI lab (GPU workstations)
  • Structural & concrete testing lab (UTM, CTM)
  • Thermal engineering & IC engine lab
  • IEEE Xplore, Springer and DELNET access
  • Plagiarism checking for all theses
  • Conference travel support for accepted papers

Careers After M.Tech

M.Tech graduates typically move into one of three routes: teaching, specialist industry roles, or doctoral study. Of the 2025 cohort of 31, eleven joined engineering colleges as assistant professors, fourteen took specialist industry positions and four registered for a PhD.

  • Assistant Professor (AICTE eligibility)
  • R&D / Design Specialist
  • Structural Design Consultant
  • Senior Software / ML Engineer
  • Energy & Thermal Systems Consultant
  • PhD admission in India or abroad

Frequently Asked Questions

No, but it matters. GATE-qualified candidates are admitted first and receive the AICTE stipend plus teaching assistantship. Non-GATE candidates are admitted against remaining seats through UPSEE or on merit, but pay full fees and receive no stipend.

Not in the full-time programme — attendance and laboratory requirements make it impractical, and the teaching assistantship carries its own commitment. Working professionals should ask the department about the part-time evening option, which runs subject to minimum enrolment.

Within limits. Each department publishes its active research strands, and you pick a topic inside one of them with your supervisor. Entirely independent topics are permitted only where a faculty member with relevant expertise agrees to supervise — otherwise the work has no real guidance behind it.

Yes — an M.Tech with the required aggregate meets AICTE eligibility for an assistant professor post at engineering colleges. Career progression beyond that usually requires a PhD, which the dissertation and teaching assistantship both prepare you for.
