Programme Overview
Mechanical Engineering is MIT's founding branch — it has run continuously since 2009 and remains the
department with the deepest workshop culture on campus. Western Uttar Pradesh runs on machinery: sugar
mills, paper units, cold chains, foundries and an expanding automotive supply base along the
Delhi–Dehradun corridor. Our graduates go into those plants and, increasingly, into electric vehicle and
renewable energy work.
The teaching philosophy is unapologetically hands-on. Students spend more timetabled hours in the
workshop than in any other branch, and every design assignment ends with something machined, printed or
assembled rather than a drawing submitted on paper.
The department has won the SPARDHA overall trophy four years running. This is not academically
relevant, but the students insist it be mentioned.
What You Will Learn
- Engineering mechanics and strength of materials
- Thermodynamics and heat transfer
- Fluid mechanics and hydraulic machines
- Machine design and theory of machines
- Manufacturing processes and metrology
- CAD, CAM and finite element analysis
- CNC programming and additive manufacturing
- Internal combustion and EV powertrains
- Refrigeration and air conditioning
- Industrial engineering and operations
Curriculum — Year by Year
Common engineering first year. The workshop practice paper introduces fitting,
welding, carpentry and machining — for many students their first time handling these tools.
- Engineering Mathematics I & II
- Engineering Physics & Chemistry
- Engineering Mechanics
- Basic Electrical Engineering
- Engineering Graphics & Design
- Workshop Practice (fitting, welding, machining)
- Professional Communication
- Programming for Problem Solving
The theoretical backbone of the branch. Placement preparation also begins in
semester four.
- Engineering Thermodynamics
- Strength of Materials
- Fluid Mechanics & Fluid Machines
- Material Science & Metallurgy
- Theory of Machines
- Manufacturing Science I
- Machine Drawing & CAD Lab
- Mini-project I + summer internship
Students choose a specialisation track and take their first department electives.
Plant visits to regional sugar and paper mills run each semester.
- Machine Design I & II
- Heat & Mass Transfer
- Internal Combustion Engines
- Manufacturing Science II & CNC Lab
- Refrigeration & Air Conditioning
- Measurement & Metrology
- Department Elective I & II
- Mini-project II + second internship
Semester eight is a six-month plant or design-office internship. Several capstone
teams each year build machines for regional agricultural use.
- Electric Vehicle Technology
- Finite Element Analysis
- Industrial Engineering & Operations
- Robotics & Automation
- Capstone Project (two semesters)
- Six-month industry internship
- Department Elective III & IV
- Open Elective (any department)
Specialisation Tracks
Electric Vehicles & Mobility
Battery systems, motor selection, thermal management and drivetrain design on our EV
test bench.
Design & Simulation
Advanced CAD, finite element analysis and computational fluid dynamics for component
and system design.
Advanced Manufacturing
CNC programming, additive manufacturing, jigs and fixtures, quality control and lean
production.
Thermal & Energy Systems
Boilers, turbines, HVAC and renewable thermal systems — directly relevant to the
region's mills.
Laboratories & Workshops
- CNC machining & turning centre
- Additive manufacturing (3D printing) cell
- Thermal engineering & IC engine lab

- EV powertrain test bench
- Material testing & metallurgy lab
- Robotics lab (shared with AI/ML)
- Fitting, welding & foundry shops
Careers & Placement
In the 2025 cycle, 94% of eligible Mechanical students received at least one offer, with a median package
of ₹5.2 LPA and a highest of ₹14 LPA. Roughly 40% are placed within 120 km of campus — a deliberate
strength for students who want to work near home.
- Design Engineer (CAD / FEA)
- Production & Plant Engineer
- Maintenance Engineer
- Quality Assurance Engineer
- HVAC & Energy Systems Engineer
- EV / Automotive Engineer
- Public sector — GATE, SSC-JE, railways
- Higher study — M.Tech, MBA
Recruiters for this branch: Tata Motors, L&T Construction, Havells,
Jindal Steel, Ashok Leyland, Triveni Engineering, Bajaj Hindusthan, Escorts Kubota, Amul and 70 more.
Head of Department
Prof. Sunil Kumar Tyagi
Head of Department — Mechanical Engineering
M.Tech from IIT Delhi with twenty-one years of teaching experience and six years
in automotive manufacturing before that. He supervised the solar sugarcane cutter project now being
trialled in Khatauli.
Frequently Asked Questions
It depends entirely on what you want to do. Software packages are higher
on average and more geographically mobile. Mechanical roles are more plentiful in this region,
harder to automate away, and the closing rank is far lower — meaning you compete with fewer people
who chose the branch by default rather than by interest.
Engineering graphics is a taught skill, not an artistic one. It is about
projection and convention, and the first-year lab starts from nothing. Most students find CAD easier
than hand drafting once they reach year two.
Yes. Most mass recruiters run branch-agnostic drives, and a number of our
Mechanical graduates take the institute's full-stack or data analytics certificate alongside their
degree specifically to qualify. The placement cell does not restrict who may sit.
Roughly eight to ten timetabled hours a week across years one to three,
plus bookable slots for project work. Final-year students can reserve workshop time through the
online slot system, including evenings.
