Programme Overview
Electrical Engineering covers the generation, transmission, distribution and use of electrical power —
the least glamorous and most indispensable branch of engineering. In a region of sugar mills, paper units
and cold storage, plus a state pushing hard on solar, our graduates rarely struggle to find core work.
The department's distinguishing asset is the campus itself. MIT runs a 1.2 MW rooftop solar installation,
and final-year Electrical students help operate and maintain it as part of their coursework. That appears
on their CVs as commissioning and maintenance experience rather than a lab exercise, and recruiters
notice.
One 2020 graduate put it plainly in our alumni survey: "Working on the campus solar plant as a
student is why I got hired by a renewable energy firm."

Specialisation Tracks
Renewable Energy
Solar PV sizing, inverters, storage and grid integration, taught on the campus's own
1.2 MW installation.
Power Systems & Protection
Load flow, fault analysis, relay coordination and substation design for distribution
utilities.
Industrial Automation
PLC programming, SCADA, motor control and drive selection — the skill set regional
mills ask for most.
Power Electronics & EV
Converters, chargers and motor drives, run jointly with the Mechanical department's EV
test bench.
Laboratories You Will Use

roster on it.
Frequently Asked Questions
Yes, on a supervised roster in the final year — inverter monitoring,
string testing, fault logging and cleaning schedules. It is assessed coursework, and the department
issues a letter describing the work for use in job applications.
Substantially. Electrical deals with power — machines, transmission,
protection, drives, typically at high voltage and current. ECE deals with signals and small-scale
circuits — communication, embedded systems, chips. They share only the first-year fundamentals and
some circuit theory.
Machines laboratory capacity. Electrical labs need large equipment and
close supervision for safety, and we run batches of fifteen. Expanding the intake would mean either
more equipment or worse supervision, and we are not willing to accept the second.
Yes. UPPCL, NTPC, railways and SSC-JE all recruit electrical engineers in
volume. The department runs an evening GATE and SSC-JE batch in years three and four at no
additional charge, shared with Civil.
